Max Scheder-Bieschin, former president of Zap electric cars, is working to make Barefoot Motors the standard when it comes to electric offroad and utility vehicles. But how would his electric vehicle stack up against a gas powered one? That's what Mythbusters asked and they have the answer. Why is Barefoot Motors interesting? Barefoot Motors is operating in what I would call a huge niche market - the ATV market. The reason I call this a "huge" niche is that when most people think of the ATV market they immediately think is very small and won't have a big impact. After you look at the numbers, you quickly see one thing for certain - while the ATV market is small in comparison to the automotive market, it is a large market in terms of straight up market size and product sold per year. So what are the numbers? 1 million ATVs sold per year, growing at a healthy clip and its an $8 billion dollar industry.
Will anyone want Green ATVs? Moreover, Green ATVS are likely to be in signficantly higher demand then old gas powered ATVs because many of the ATVs that are in use and many of the ATVs that are bought each year are not bought by thrill seekers, they are bought by farmers, wine makers, national parks and other work-use situations. Wouldn't it be great, and make a lot of sense, it all of the national parks in the US standardized on Green ATVs?
Aren't Green ATVs wimpy? So what about those thrill seeking buyers of ATVs. Would they ever be interested in a wimpy "electric" ATV? This is where it gets realling interesting. Any engineer in their first year of school can tell you that an electric motor gives you more torque than a gas motor - this is great for uility vehicles who needs lot of torque. So would it be possible that a Green ATV would win a race with a gas powered ATV? Enter the MythBusters.
The Green ATV Myth. That's right the MythBusters visited Barefoot Motors vehicle to challenge their ATV in a duel with a Polaris 800 (one of the most powerfull gas powered ATVs) at the Lakeport Speedway. While they can't reveal whether the "myth" that an electric ATV could never beat a gas ATV, I can see it will be an interesting episode.
