Have you ever filled out one of the carbon footprint calculators? Well I did and what I found was astonishing: I am not very green at all. What are my worst failures and what am I doing about it?Well, I am going to be keeping everyone update on what I am personally doing to change my habits and buy new products and services that make my life a more sustainable one. So far however, I will list my worst grievances against myself:
- As my friend (Lukas) pointed out yesterday "hey Steve, don't you think its kind of ironic that you write a green blog but we are driving in your SUV?" KERRRPOW! Wow! this one is one I am going to fix as soon as I can. in my own defense, my wife and I have been looking for some time for a good hybrid to fit our needs and I will say that I used to drive to downtown SF and now I take the Muni.
- My house is basically like trying to heat swiss cheese in a snow storm. We have a 1905 house with the original windows probably designed by people from the gold rush;
- I am pretty sure that all of my 15 laptops, tvs, radios, my 12 ipods, my iPhone, my MAC, my blanket heater and about 192 other things are always on standby-mode (also known as stealth earth death mode);
- I believe my wife and I consume more water than Millpitas, CA. I am not willing to admit that we don't yet have low-flo shower heads, but I am willing to invest all of my money in inventing something that creates water if that's what's necessary to keep them;
- Our refridgerator is so old and so huge and probably takes so much energy that if we replace it there may be a mysterious reduction in the brown outs in California.

Many people are curious, what I am doing since I left Powerset. Well, the short story is that I have decided to dedicate myself to what I call the new Green Economy and I am working on several initiatives with other leaders in government and businesses that all fall under the responsibility of non-profit that I am founding called SF Green.
